Koefoed Hornslet Lis Danish Modern Chairs
While I tend focus on furniture more than 150 years old, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to restore and refinish these Koefoed Hornlet chairs for some friends. They spent months putting this set together from different sources, but needed stabilization and a refinish to unify their appearance. They were refinished in Sutherland Welles Tung Oil wiping varnish, which highlighted the teak, while protecting them for daily use.
An outstanding example of Danish mid-century design after repairs and refinishing.
Backs look good too. One pair came with the original factory spray lacquer. The other pair had a light coat of Danish oil, so it was necessary to strip both, lightly sand and refinish with a better product.
Gluing and clamping loose joints.
Hot hide glue injected into joints that move, but won't come out.
Clamp close up.
A common weak point for chairs where the wood tends to split. Closed these open joints with glue.
Close up of the split.
Glue and clamp it up.
Chilling after their first coat of new finish.
