George III Satinwood Marquetry Games Table
This was a lovely table c.1790-1800 in satinwood and harewood in sad shape discovered at a local auction. Missing face and leg veneers, loose top veneers, torn wool baize top lining, loose legs. This was a four-month process to bring this unique piece back to life. I consider this my master thesis in my antique restoration journey. It found a new home with a young couple from Virginia.
As purchased from auction. Total Monet...looks good far away...but a mess up close.
Missing veneer, string molding.
More veneer issues including later replacement with thinner stock and...painted?
Marquetry lifting and finish is far gone.
Wood separated at the hinge screws.
Addressing the missing veneer. Makeshift clamping.
New Ceylon satinwood veneer set.
More veneer replacements
Old baize removed...resetting and regluing two legs.
Laying new wool baize from the UK. My most anxious moment of the restoration. Can't pop down to Home Depot for a replacement. Also, now there are tariffs.
Finished. Shining.
The French polish took four to six weeks to get right.
Ante up!
Reset all the hinges. New brass screws replaced the hodgepodge of screws from the last 200 years.
