Antique English Burl Walnut Chest of Drawers, Queen Anne to Early Georgian, c. 1740–1760

$4,950

An English chest of drawers in richly figured burl walnut with rosewood feather banding and cross-banded borders, dating during the transition from the late Queen Anne to early Georgian period. The chest presents beautifully with warm color, strong figure in the walnut burl, and the retained honest character expected from furniture of this age.

The top is quarter-matched in dramatic burl walnut veneer, framed by rosewood feather banding and narrow cross-banding. The case sides are also veneered in burl walnut inset with rosewood crossbanding, an attractive feature not always found on comparable chests of the period. The bracket feet are veneered and book-matched to align with the surrounding figure, a refined detail typical of better-made examples.

The chest has an oak carcass with pine drawer bottoms and hand-cut dovetail drawer construction, consistent with 18th-century English cabinetmaking. The underside and interior structure show signs of age and long use, including runner wear consistent with centuries of service. The brasses are later replacements but are period-appropriate pierced examples in the Queen Anne to early Georgian style.

The piece was recently conserved and stabilized. A later lacquer finish was carefully removed and replaced with a traditional shellac finish to better highlight the depth and chatoyance of the walnut burl veneers. Loose veneer was consolidated, small areas of veneer loss replaced with like species, and the drawer runners adjusted to ensure smooth operation.

Condition:
Historic restorations are evident and are typical of furniture of this age. Veneer stabilized and finish refreshed. Structurally sound and stable with well-functioning drawers.

Additional photos and detailed conservation notes are available upon request. Virtual or in-person (Washington, DC) viewing appointments are also available.
