18th C. English Walnut & Parcel Gilt Pier Mirror, Conserved
$2850
An elegant 18th century English pier mirror in richly figured walnut and accented with gilt decoration over carved wood. Tall and architectural at 57 inches high, this mirror offers warmth, patina, and classical proportions.
This Georgian pier mirror perhaps dates to the 3rd quarter of the 18th C. and features a finely arched walnut top panel laid in beautifully figured walnut. The giltwood ornament includes an urn and fruit crest, scrolling lower apron, and floral paterae, blending late Baroque naturalism with emerging Neoclassicism symmetry.
The gilded elements retain visible bole and surface variation consistent with age. The mirror plate shows age-appropriate spotting, contributing to its authentic character. The reverse retains early printed and manuscript paper backing consistent with 18th century English construction.
This mirror has been carefully conserved to stabilize and preserve its original materials while maintaining age and character. Work performed includes: gentle surface cleaning of walnut veneer and gilt elements; localized repair to small areas of historic loss; very limited integration of very worn surface areas with a restrained use of gilding wax; final wax finish to unify the walnut surface.
