Early American Worktable in Cherry c. 1840-60
This table was found at an antique center in Central New York where cherry reigns supreme. It was a lovely example of an honest piece of furniture made by a smaller regional cabinet maker with local materials by hand. Like a lot of finds, it had a horrible modern spray finish that obscured the wood. The knobs were an obvious replacement since they didn’t line up. There were no areas of original finish and many hands had their way with it over the century. Refinished in tung oil, it shines today and has a new home in Leesburg, Virginia.
As found at the antique center in central New York...those nobs sure don't line up. But there was potential.
Nice legs tho
Sad state of affairs
What was this old finish? Failing.
Completed restoration
Cherry doing what cherry does.
Do those legs go all the way up?
Swapped out the knobs that were added later (probably opened by using a key) with smaller antiqued brass pulls. Outstanding early hand cut cut dovetails.
