Early 19th C. American Primitive Grain-Painted Dome-Top Box
$625
A nice small early American faux grain-painted document box dating to the early 19th century, retaining most of its painted surface.
Constructed in softwood with a domed lid, the box is decorated simulated wood grain, including sweeping figure across the entire piece. The interior retains remnants of its historic paper lining, including newsprint from 1817 and 1818 with references to Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, and Fishkill, New York.
The domed lid is joined with simple iron snipe hinges, and the lock is functional with an antique key fitted to the lock.
The painted surface has been carefully cleaned and conserved, with localized color compensation to visually integrate areas of paint loss while retaining the scratches, wear, irregularities, and patina accumulated over two centuries. Finished with a light protective wax.
